Its development can be traced from Liburnian and Roman times, through the Krk dukes of the Frankopan family, up to the present day. In the area of the old town core there was a prehistoric fort (kastelij), and nearby is the ancient site of Fulfinum, essentially a basilica whose basic shape is a Latin cross. It is preserved up to the roof height and is the only surviving sacred structure of this type not only on the island of Krk but also in the entire Croatian littoral, and according to some sources the largest in the Mediterranean.
