Valtura is a small village in Istria located in the municipality of Ližnjan just a few kilometers away from Pula.
It is best known for its proximity to the archaeological site of Nezakcij, the capital of the Illyrian people of Histri.
Nearby is Šandalja, a system of several caves, named after the quarry of the same name.
Back in Roman times, a stone was exploited on this site.
The Šandalja is today located in the area of the Open Criminal Institute Valtura.
By the richness of paleontological, paleolytic and paleoanthropological findings, which are found in 9 meters thick deposits, the site occupies a leading place on European soil.
To date, the caves of Shandal I and II have been explored, about ten meters away from each other.
The remains of a million-year-old Homo erectus incisor were found there.
It is precisely this data that speaks of the oldest prehistoric man in Europe.
Also, the oldest percussion instrument in Europe (creme percussion) was found on this site.
There are several quarries in the Valtura area.
The limestone of the same name that is extracted here is used for the cladding of internal and external surfaces.In the place is the neo-Gothic church of St. John (from 1899), whose twenty-eight-meter bell tower is unique looking built in the form of an octagon.
