One of the most important Croatian islands, Vir (Putadura in Italian), is located near the town of Nin in the northwestern part of Dalmatia. It is separated from the mainland near Privlaka, and the Municipality of Vir, which was officially founded in 1993, includes the entire island of Vir with the settlements of Lozice, Torovi, Vir and the island of Školjić. At the time of the organization, Vir belonged to a part of Zadar Municipality, while today it is officially more organized and connected to the city of Nin. It is believed that the population (then Croats) began to settle on the island around 1570. According to official data, there are slightly more than 3,000 inhabitants living on the island today. The famous bridge that connects the island and the mainland was built in the seventies of the 20th century, and is made of 11 columns.
