year and since then the Park occupies an area of slightly less than 300 km2.
The park is mostly covered with forest vegetation (81%), a smaller part is covered by grasslands (15%) and areas altered by anthropogenic action (3%), and the water surfaces occupy only slightly less than 1% of the park area.
The lake system of Plitvice Lakes consists of 16 named and numerous smaller, cascaded lakes.
Due to the geological background and characteristic hydrogeological conditions, the lake system is divided into Upper and Lower lakes.
Proansko jezero, Ciginovac, Okrugljak, Batinovac, Veliko jezero, Malo jezero, Vir, Galovac, Milino jezero, Gradinsko jezero, Burgeti and Kozjak are twelve lakes that make up the Upper Lakes, formed on impermeable dolomites.
The upper lakes are more spacious, indented and milder shores compared to the Lower Lakes formed in a permeable limestone base, cut into a narrow canyon of steep slopes.
The lower lakes consist of Milanovac, Gavanovac, Kaludjerovac and Novakovića Brod.
The Plitvice Lakes system ends with the impressive waterfalls of the Sastavci, at the foot of which the flow of the Korana River begins.
