Unlike other Istrian towns and cities where the settlement is formed on a hill with a church and bell tower, and houses are lined up along the edges of the hill, in St. Peter in the Forest there were no houses around the church, nor around the monastery, but the inhabitants lived far away, in scattered hamlets located next to fields and vineyards and on the edges of the karst valleys filled with red soil that they cultivated, just as it is today.
