Property description

TWO BARNS 300 YEARS OLD, WITH LAND
In the extreme northwest of Croatia, in the idyllic village of Cvetlin behind Trakošćan, in the seclusion of a gentle hill and on the state border with Slovenia, a Zagorje “house”, 300 years old, is being white‑washed!!! It is actually two connected “houses” with an area of 120 m2, on a plot of 9.344 m2, containing valuable and preserved examples of the traditional construction of that region (built around the year 1700), one of which even has an original thatched roof, which the owner has protected with a tarpaulin. They are made from wooden beams using the so‑called Croatian joint, coated with mud and covered with bundles of rye straw, with a preserved three‑room interior layout that gives these two connected houses six rooms. Other features of these rare specimens of indigenous architecture: along the southern façade runs a small covered trijem, the walls are divided by small window openings, original joinery with shutters, preserved plank floors, wooden ceilings with prominent beams, one preserved “black kitchen”, two very beautiful fireplaces, original room arrangement and interior decoration with valuable pieces of furniture and utilitarian objects (ceramics, sacred items and objects woven from willow). On the north side of the building the entrance leads to a preserved stone cellar, with traditional viticultural implements, and further in the house there is a storage room containing many more archaic items that are still in use. Because for centuries all characteristics of this building method have been carefully retained, the property together with its inventory represents a great cultural, aesthetic, artistic and ethnographic value that must be maintained: the property was until recently on the List of Preventively Protected Cultural Goods and is entered in the Register of Cultural Goods of the Republic of Croatia. On the northwest side of the courtyard of this complex there is also a source of drinking water; the property has electricity and water. Other location details: - access passes under a standing oak cross with the crucified Christ and a small statue of the Virgin Mary carved from linden wood; - from the bench in front of the house there is a view far into the rolling, hilly Zagorje landscape, into endless beautiful, fertile coves and to the church of St. Peter and Paul; - behind the “houses” two old state stone boundary markers are set one after the other: one placed in the time of Empress Maria Theresa; the other, from 1941, bears the letters N D H carved by the Germans, and on the opposite, Slovenian side of the stone a large letter “D” (the letter denoted Deutschland, because the Nazis occupied and attached Slovenia to the Third Reich).
