Property description

TWO BARNS 300 YEARS OLD, WITH LAND
In the far northwest of Croatia, in the idyllic village of Cvetlin behind Trakošćan, in the shelter of a gentle hill and on the state border with Slovenia, a Zagorje “house” is being whitewashed, 300 years old!!! It is actually two connected “houses” with an area of 120 m2, on a plot of land of 9.344 m2, valuable and preserved examples of the traditional building of that area (built around the year 1700), of which one even has a preserved thatched roof, which the owner has protected with a tarpaulin. They are made of wooden beams in the so‑called Croatian “vez”, smeared with mud and covered with bundles of rye straw, with a preserved three‑room interior layout, which in these two connected houses provides 6 rooms. Other features of these rare examples of indigenous architecture: along the length of the southern façade extends a small covered porch, the walls are divided by small window openings, original joinery with shutters, the plank floors are preserved, wooden ceilings with prominent beams, one preserved ‘black kitchen’, 2 very beautiful fireplaces, original room layout and interior arrangement with valuable pieces of furniture and utilitarian objects (ceramics, sacred items and objects woven from willow twigs). On the north side of the building the entrance leads to a preserved stone cellar, with traditional viticultural items, and further in the house there is a storage room containing many more archaic objects that are still in use. Since for centuries all features of this building method have been carefully retained, the property together with its inventory represents a great cultural, aesthetic, artistic and ethnographic value that must be preserved: the property was until recently on the List of Preventively Protected Cultural Goods and entered in the Register of Cultural Goods of the Republic of Croatia. On the northwest side of the courtyard of this complex there is also a source of drinking water; the property has electricity and water. Other location details:- access by passing under a vertical oak cross with a crucified Christ and a small statue of the Virgin Mary carved from linden wood;- from the bench in front of the house there is a view far into the rolling, hilly Zagorje landscape, into an endless series of beautiful, fertile coves and to the church of St. Peter and Paul;- behind the “house” two old state stone boundary markers are set one after the other: 1. erected in the time of Empress Maria Theresa; the other dates from 1941. The Germans carved the letters N D H, and on the opposite, Slovenian side of the stone a large letter “D” (the letter denoted Deutschland, because the Nazis occupied and annexed Slovenia to the Third Reich).
