According to archaeological findings, Zaostrog was also inhabited in Roman times, as evidenced by numerous ancient monuments, including a relief of the god Mithras and the tombstone of Aurelius Veturi, which are in the monastery collection. Zaostrog was first mentioned in 1494 in Croatian and Turkish. In the old settlement of Zaostrog there are three churches, the old Gothic St. Barbara's, the small church of St. Roch from the 17th century and the newer church of St. Barbara from 1872. The residents of Zaostrog began to descend to the sea as early as the 17th century, and after the earthquake in 1962, like other coastal settlements under Biokovo, they left the old village and developed tourism in the new Zaostrog - Kraj. Along with a beautiful long beach and a small harbor, new, modernly equipped holiday homes and apartments are being built next to the old ones. Zaostrog today has about 350 inhabitants.
