Opening an account in Croatia

In recent years, Croatia has become one of the areas where foreign investors buy properties not only on the coast. Many investors from Western Europe have realized that Croatia holds interesting business potential. It's true that Croatia is not among the most developed European markets. When comparing Croatia to other Balkan countries, Croatia stands as one of the economically strongest nations. However, its economy is largely dependent on tourism, and that's why foreign investors eagerly buy properties and further develop their businesses in the tourism sector.

Why have a bank account in Croatia?

If you aim to do business successfully in Croatia or are considering purchasing a vacation property for personal use, you cannot avoid opening a bank account in Croatia. Although Croatia adopted the Euro on 1.1.2023, due to the fees for SEPA payments, it's still beneficial to open an account locally. You'll mainly use this account to cover routine expenses related to property maintenance, like waste collection, advance payments for electricity, water, etc.

Banks in Croatia

Opening a bank account in Croatia isn't a significant hurdle, just like in other parts of Europe or the European Union. However, in exceptional cases, a Croatian bank might decline your account opening request. To open a bank account, you need to have your own OIB . Some banks have branches all over Europe, e.g., Raiffeisenbank, UnicreditBank, or Erste, which can assist you in opening an account in Croatia online.
